Genius Sports has strengthened its senior sports team, with the appointment of Romain Vez to lead its global basketball strategy.

Vez will be responsible for managing and expanding Genius Sports’ partnerships with over 250 basketball leagues and federations worldwide.

Having played in the top division of Swiss basketball, the firm’s new head of basketball strategy has built up more than 20 years’ experience working for some of the largest organisations in world sport, including UEFA and Genius Sports’ long-term partner FIBA.

He has played crucial commercial and operational roles delivering several major international sports projects such as the 2008 Olympic Games and each Champions League Final from 2013 to 2018.

Being selected to lead their next stage of expansion and product innovation is a real honour and a challenge I’m thrilled to be undertaking.”

Genius Sports’ basketball technology powers over 100,000 matches a year, combining cutting-edge solutions for capturing play-by-play data, managing competitions and enhancing digital fan experiences through real-time statistics, shot charts and visualisations.

Steven Burton, Managing Director of Genius Sports, added: “Our long-standing success in basketball has been pivotal in establishing Genius Sports’ reputation and global reach. Romain has a unique appreciation of the challenges and opportunities facing modern basketball leagues and federations and we’re excited to welcome him to undertake this pivotal role in our business.”
