Udinese Calcio has announced that the crypto meme coin APU Apustaja will be its sleeve sponsor for the 2024/25 season.

Under the agreement, APU’s logo will be displayed on the kit’s sleeve, featured on LED panels at home matches, and utilised in various marketing assets such as social media, interview backdrops and match tickets for promotional activities.

Udinese Calcio stated: “We are proud to partner with APU, one of the most innovative and engaging companies within the crypto sector. Like APU, we are innovators, and we believe there can be a lot of overlap between our companies when it comes to principles and best practices, something we are very keen to explore.

“As a club, we keep up with the times and are delighted to start partnering with a leading platform that many sports brands already trust.”

APU Apustaja is a meme coin, a type of cryptocurrency created primarily for entertainment or as a joke rather than for serious financial use. These coins often gain popularity through social media and internet memes rather than through traditional financial backing.

A spokesperson for APU said: “This is a proud day for the APU community. We are thrilled with the partnership with Udinese Calcio. This partnership further enhances our vision to integrate the meme coin culture into mainstream sports and reach a global audience.

“Serie A football is one of the top leagues in the world and provides a huge platform to showcase the potential and fun of APU Apustaja to millions of football fans worldwide.”

In recent years, football and crypto have become increasingly intertwined with several clubs even announcing crypto partnerships, such as Tottenham Hotspur naming crypto platform Kraken as the club’s first-ever official crypto and Web3 partner earlier this month.

Although the meme coin sector isn’t a sector that is well-known in the world of football, this partnership isn’t the first. Lionel Messi promoted a meme coin named WaterCoin, which saw the Solana-backed token surge in price.

Many meme coins are used to support various causes. For instance, WaterCoin focuses on raising awareness about water-related issues. Similarly, APU Apustaja is partnering with Udinese Calcio to promote and advance sustainability efforts.

APU added: “Leveraging our engaged and diverse community, we aim to amplify Udinese’s efforts in environmental sustainability by encouraging eco-friendly practices, supporting green projects and raising awareness about the importance of sustainability.

“Through our combined efforts, we aspire to create a positive impact that extends beyond the Crypto space, fostering a healthier planet for future generations.”
