Real Betis Balompié has agreed a two-year deal with online gambling company Betway which will see the firm’s logo appear on the front of the team’s shirt from the 2020/21 season.

Betway has also been named as the team’s official shirt sponsor, which will see the betting operator’s logo displayed around the Benito Villamarin stadium – supporting the firm in gaining additional brand exposure.

Ramón Alarcón, General Director of Business of Real Betis Balompié, stated: “At Real Betis we have been working in the digital environment for many years to increase the value of our advertising assets.

“This sponsorship agreement, which is the most important quantitatively in our history, recognises this work, for which we are proud. In addition, the agreement comes with a leading company in the sector, with scrupulous compliance with current regulations.”

Anthony Werkman, Betway CEO, commented: “Real Betis play in one of the most popular leagues in the world, where we already have a tremendous presence. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with one of the established clubs with a great history. We look forward to showcasing Betway to their fans and the people of Seville.”

Gambling sponsorships in Spain have come under the spotlight in recent months after Alberto Garzón, the Spanish Minister of Consumer Affairs, submitted new proposals to toughen up regulations on betting companies.

Under the new proposals to amend the Royal Decree, which include further restrictions to sponsorships, Garzón has changed the wording of the decree to state that “sponsorship in sports T-shirts or equipment will not be admissible”, with gambling companies already banned from featuring on youth shirts.

Insider Insight: Betway and Real Betis’ new sponsorship will provide a welcome financial boost to the club’s revenue stream given the impact COVID-19 is still having on football. Despite new laws looming over gambling sponsorships, Betway has opted to support the side which will still continue to raise the firm’s brand appeal and develop its fanbase.
