The National Basketball Association (NBA) has appointed Gregg Winik, as its new President, Content and Executive Producer from 1 January.
The Emmy Award winner who recently served as an Executive Producer for the documentary series The Last Dance, will report to NBA President, Global Content & Media Distribution, Bill Koenig.
On the appointment, Koenig noted: “Gregg is a highly skilled and award-winning producer with a long track record of delivering compelling and distinctive content. He knows the NBA well and will be influential in enhancing the way our games and related programming are presented to our fans.”
In his role, Winik will oversee the development and production of live games and other programming, including content within the NBA’s direct-to-consumer offerings.
Previous industry experience of the new hire includes in 2006 when he formed Winik Media; a production studio and partner for media companies, sports leagues and teams, and advertisers. Winik Media went on to create the digital video content and technology platform, CineSport.
More recently, Winik produced For Ball and Country – the story of the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s Olympic team – for NBC’s Peacock, and has also produced the NBA Rooks documentary.
Winik shared his delight in the decision, and added: “The sports industry is experiencing its most disruptive period in generations, but the programming assets of the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, Basketball Africa League and their teams and players are truly unique. With premium direct-to-consumer content, the opportunities are striking.”
Furthemore, the NBA has stated that Winik played an ‘instrumental role’ in capturing the footage during the Chicago Bulls’ 1997-98 championship season, which ‘provided the foundation’ for the aforementioned documentary series, The Last Dance.
