EFL looking for broadcast partners for intended documentary series

The English Football League (EFL) is on the hunt for interested parties looking to help in the production of a potential documentary series. 

After issuing a Request for Proposal, the EFL stated that it intends to begin filming for either 2025/26 or 2026/27 season. 

The documentary series aims to follow the drama of competition that surrounds EFL’s three league divisions; the EFL Championship, League One and League Two, whilst also providing clubs with an opportunity to build their brand globally. 

The EFL intends for this series to give fans and viewers alike an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of EFL teams, players and the communities that come with them.

Interested broadcasting partners will be able to gain interviews and showcase behind-the-scenes access to clubs’ infrastructure and also gain additional exposure.

The EFL’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ben Wright said: “This is an unrivalled content opportunity with unparalleled access for production partners to some of the most unpredictable, intense and exciting competitions in world football.

“The EFL has a rich carousel of story-telling opportunities and between our Clubs and competitions, the creative scope for a documentary series is extensive and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Clubs and competitions on a global scale.” 

With almost 50% of EFL clubs now under international ownership, the English football organisation is looking to enact its growing popularity across multiple countries. 

Recently promoted League One club Wrexham AFC produced its own Disney+ docuseries titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, detailing the Welsh club’s rise to prominence under the ownership of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Football docuseries have been increasing as of late, with Netflix producing programmes surrounding Manchester City’s treble-winning season and multiple seasons on Sunderland’s battle to rise back up the EFL.

Respondents are being asked to consider financial returns, premium content and output, distribution, exposure and marketing to the EFL’s Request for Proposal.
