Ahead of its first season as a UK broadcaster of the UEFA Champions League, Amazon Prime Video has revealed clarification on watching Europe’s elite club competition.
Sharing UK rights for the Champions League with Warner Bros Discovery’s (WBD) TNT Sports, the media conglomerate’s streaming platform Discovery+ will also be available for customers to download from Amazon Prime Video to watch all games in one place.
This is in a bid to avoid any confusion for viewers in where to go to watch Champions League games on streaming services. The deal with Warner Bros Discovery will also see TNT Sports Box Office integrated into Amazon’s own pay-per-view service.
Amazon signed a three-year deal with UEFA for broadcast rights worth £1.5bn for the Champions League, gaining a pick of games for Tuesday fixtures.
Another add-on onto the Amazon Prime Video platform is the addition of DAZN’s NFL Game Pass. Amazon execs have cited that there is current fragmentation when it comes to watching live sports online, with the WBD and DAZN deals in place to eliminate this through a singular platform.
Chris Bird, Managing Director of Amazon Prime Video UK, said: “We recognise sports rights are fragmented across different services and this can cause frustration.
“We want to offer the widest range of sport in a single place with a single user interface and payment system. We know many of our viewers want to watch more than one match. We believe this will make Prime Video a home for sports fans.”
Amazon Prime Video in the UK has been building its profile as one of the leading live sports broadcasters as of recent years.
The streaming service became the Premier League’s first exclusive streaming partner since 2019 for selected fixtures per season. However, it was not involved in its latest broadcast deal with the league which kicks in next season, with the Premier League opting for no streaming partner and sticking with domestic TV broadcasters Sky Sports and TNT Sports.
This may be partially why the company sought after the lucrative broadcast rights for the Champions League, which continues to be the biggest club cup competition in world football. English winners of the competition include Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.
As part of its Champions League coverage, Amazon is assembling a cast of pundits and presenters to give their analysis every gameweek Tuesday. Presenter Gabby Logan will be joined by the likes of Clarence Seedorf, Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge and more.
Champions League content is included in the regular £8.99 monthly Prime membership.
