Rangers FC has appointed Patrick Stewart, former interim CEO of Manchester United, as its new CEO.

Stewart will join the Scottish club on 16 December 2024, bringing over two decades of experience in various high-level roles to help build on the club’s recent record-breaking revenue, as highlighted in its annual report.

Rangers’ Interim Chairman, John Gilligan, commented: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Patrick to the club as CEO. Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.”

Raised in Aberdeen, Stewart began his career as a lawyer in Scotland before joining TEAM Marketing in 2001, an agency responsible for UEFA club competitions. In 2006, he moved to Manchester United as General Counsel and Company Secretary, later expanding his role to oversee commercial and operational matters.

In 2019, Stewart joined Manchester United’s board, where he was involved in player contract negotiations and co-led the creation of the club’s women’s team. He became an Executive Director of the club’s New York Stock Exchange-listed parent company in 2022, managing key relationships with the FA, Premier League and UEFA.

Stewart became Manchester United’s CEO in 2023, overseeing a significant investment transaction and ensuring operational stability during a transitional period. Additionally, he has also worked on various committees within the FA, Premier League, and European Club Association, and served as an arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Rangers still have several key senior roles to fill, with ongoing discussions about appointing a new Chairperson. Gilligan stated: “The board continues in discussions with several excellent candidates for the role of Chairperson and expect to make an announcement of an appointment in the coming weeks.”

In the club’s annual report, Gilligan acknowledged the challenges Rangers has faced, particularly regarding key vacancies. Along with the search for a new Chairperson, the club is also looking to fill the role of Director of Football Operations following Creag Robertson’s departure.
