The Premier League has moved to maintain engagement with its Malaysian fanbase via a renewal of its rights deal with local broadcaster Astro.

The media outlet has secured a renewal of its exclusive media rights to the Premier League and the Emirates FA Cup from the 2025/26 to 2027/28 seasons.

Astro will broadcast all 380 annual Premier League matches in HD and selected matches in 4K UHD, in addition to all fixtures in the FA Cup each year. Matches will be covered on both television and via online streaming.

Paul Molnar, Chief Media Officer, Premier League, said: “We are delighted to renew our partnership with Astro, one of our longest-standing partners in Asia, for the next three seasons.

“Astro has been instrumental in bringing the Premier League to Malaysian fans for more than a decade, showcasing the competition with consistency, quality, and passion. This renewal reflects our shared commitment to providing world-class football entertainment to supporters across Malaysia.

“We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with Astro to deliver the best possible experience for Premier League fans in the region.”

As one of the world’s most globally recognised sports leagues, home to international footballing club brands and a regular destination for some of the world’s most talented players, the Premier League has built up a substantial fanbase in Malaysia over the years.

The Premier League has an estimated Southeast Asian audience of 386 million during the 2021/22 season, with Malaysia being one of the most significant markets. Manchester United and Liverpool in particular have a strong following in the country.

Both clubs have a history of engagement with Malaysian audiences. Manchester United first visited the country in 2009 while engaging on a tour of Indonesia that year, and has since signed regional commercial deals, such as a partnership with Malaysia Airlines this year.

The Premier League too is keenly aware of the significance of these markets, hence arrangements with the likes of Astro. The renewal of Premier League rights maintains Astro’s significant arsenal of sports content, which also includes the Liga Malaysia, elite cricket and tennis and Formula One, among other sports.

Euan Smith, Group CEO, Astro, said: “We are thrilled to extend our partnership for the Premier League and the Emirates FA Cup for three more seasons after the current campaign.

“This renewal demonstrates our commitment to continue delivering the very best of sports to Malaysians. The Premier League is a cornerstone of our sports programming, and we look forward to bringing fans closer to the action through our extensive coverage, innovative shows and engaging experiences.”
