West Ham United has announced WellO2 as its first official and exclusive respiratory supplier.

The London team has become the first Premier League club to partner with a respiratory supplier, hoping that the deal will increase awareness and education around improving respiratory health.

Nathan Thompson, Chief Commercial Officer at West Ham United, stated: “We are delighted to be working with WellO2 to promote respiratory health among our loyal fan base.

“This partnership signifies our dedication to supporting our fans not only in their passion for football but also in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.”

Respiratory health has become a big talking point and concern in football and other sports around the world, with the PGA Tour partnering with technology manufacturer Whoop in 2021, which made it the official fitness wearable of golf’s PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions.

The technology alerted golfer Nick Watney, as he noticed his respiratory rate had sped up significantly, this resulted in his findings preventing a COVID-19 mass outbreak.

Thompson added: “Our shared values of excellence, commitment, and the importance we both place on healthy living for all make this partnership a natural fit. Together, we aim to inspire and empower athletes and fans alike to prioritise their well-being and achieve their full potential, both on and off the pitch.”

The Finnish-based company WellO2 was founded by Entrepreneur, Aulis Kärkkäinen, who after many years of suffering with breathing problems, created a solution the WellO2 breathing device.

WellO2’s device combines steam breathing and resistance training of the respiratory muscles and has proven to be one of the most technologically innovative and versatile drug-free tools for the treatment and maintenance of respiratory health.

Tuomas Mattelmäki, CEO of WellO2, commented: “WellO2 offers significant benefits to both elite athletes and everyone who has respiratory problems or aims to improve performance. We are extremely excited that West Ham United contacted us, and we are now starting as their respiratory health supplier.”

West Ham has added a number of health related partnerships this year. The club announced WOW HYDRATE as its official sports hydration partner last month, with hopes of enhancing the fitness of its players and fans.

Richard Collinge, Performance Director at West Ham, said: “We look forward to working with the team at WellO2. The importance of effective breathing techniques and maximising lung capacity when playing football cannot be understated. In working with WellO2 we are excited to explore how to best implement the WellO2 devices into the strength and conditioning programme for our players.

“We are always open to new and innovative ways to generate improvements in player performance, and we see the relationship with WellO2 as another valuable asset in supporting the team.”
