Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are adding to their football portfolio after acquiring Colombian football team Club Deportivo Seguros La Equidad

The Wrexham AFC owners backed a group led by Al Tylis and Sam Porter, the latter being an executive at Mexican team Club Necaxa who Reynolds and McElhenney are also minority owners in, which also includes US celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Kate Upton and former Real Madrid and Arsenal player Mesut Özil

It is believed that Longoria is also an investor in La Equidad and is joined by former NBA All-Star Shawn Marion as part of the investment group.

The investment group acquired 99% ownership of La Equidad at a valuation of $30m. The group will look to improve upon the team’s 13th place finish in the Categoría Primera A last season.

“I am pleased to confirm that Al Tylis, our investment partners, and I have successfully acquired Club Deportivo La Equidad,” Porter said in a statement.

“This is an incredible opportunity to enhance the club’s growth in every aspect and to become an integral part of Colombian football.

“We are privileged to collaborate with an outstanding group of investors, including Eva Longoria, Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Shawn Marion, who have been instrumental in our project at Club Necaxa in Mexico. Together, we are committed to elevating the Club to its highest potential.”

The success of Wrexham AFC’s climb to the English third-tier will have no doubt buoyed Reynolds and McElhenney to invest in other football clubs across the globe.

The Hollywood duo’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ docuseries has helped garner the attention of both the UK and the US and with their financial backing, Wrexham are once again poised for promotion up the English football league, currently sitting 3rd in League One

Whilst it appears that Reynolds and McElhenney will not have as much control over La Equidad and Club Necaxa due to being minority owners as they do as majority owners of Wrexham, the duo seem confident in replicating their success in Wales over to Colombia and Mexico, with similar docuseries in the pipeline.
