LeBron James uses retirement rumours to launch ad campaign
LeBron James has used growing speculation about his retirement to front a new campaign for Hennessy, parodying his 2010 ESPN special “The Decision” in an ad released this week.
In an X post James teased a major announcement with the hashtag #TheSecondDecision, echoing the dramatic tone of his original departure from Cleveland 14 years ago. The post left a lot of questions for fans and analysts, with some suggesting the 39-year-old might be about to call time on his NBA career.
However, the campaign revealed a brand partnership with Hennessy, as James recreated the iconic setting of his original televised decision.
While his long-term playing future remains unclear, the ad demonstrates how James is already leveraging end-of-career speculation to amplify his commercial footprint. It was also reported that ticket prices for the Lakers’ final home game of the season dramatically increased on Stubhub after the post.
Richard Monks named CEO of Independent Football Regulator
The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has appointed Richard Monks as its first CEO, as the organisation moves closer to becoming fully operational.
Monks brings nearly 20 years of experience in financial regulation, including senior roles at the Financial Conduct Authority. He also worked on the government’s response to the Fan-Led Review of Football Governance, helping design the financial rules now included in the Football Governance Act.
Before joining the IFR, Monks was a Partner at EY, where he advised both regulators and financial firms. His background in policy, strategy and regulatory systems is expected to be key in how the new football regulator operates.
The appointment, announced on October 7, follows the recent naming of David Kogan as IFR Chair. Combined, Kogan and Monks bring a mix of football, media and regulatory experience.
“This is a key step in building the organisation and setting up a system that works for clubs and fans,” said Monks.
The IFR will now begin setting up its rules and guidance, with industry consultations expected in the coming months.
Ilona Maher leads Barbie’s new rugby ambassador team
Barbie has named four international rugby stars as brand ambassadors to mark International Day of the Girl, with US Olympian Ilona Maher leading the group.

Joining Maher in the campaign are Ellie Kildunne (England), Portia Woodman-Wickliffe (New Zealand) and Nassira Konde (France), each recognised with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll created in their likeness. The initiative is part of Barbie’s broader push to promote confidence and visibility for women in sport.
A prominent voice on social media, Maher becomes the first athlete to be modelled in a new muscular Barbie body type, designed to better represent strength-based athletes. Her doll will go on sale in 2026.
The campaign sees Barbie continue its shift toward purpose-led marketing and comes alongside research conducted in the players’ home countries on the barriers young girls face in sport. All four athletes will support the brand’s global advocacy work and content strategy into 2026.
Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first active athlete to reach billionaire status
Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first active player in any sport to be officially recognised as a billionaire, entering the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with an estimated net worth of $1.4bn.
The 39-year-old’s inclusion on the global rich list follows years of high-earning endorsements, personal ventures and, more recently, his record-breaking move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. The Saudi deal alone is reported to be worth over $400m and includes an ownership stake in the club.
Ronaldo’s off-pitch empire has grown exponentially in recent years. In 2024, he launched his YouTube channel UR Cristiano, which became the fastest in history to surpass 50 million subscribers. He also partnered with director Matthew Vaughn to co-found UV Marv, an independent film studio based in Los Angeles.
Major sponsorships with brands like Nike continue to drive his earnings, but Ronaldo’s increasing focus on ownership, media and entertainment shows a broader strategy to build influence beyond football.
Ronaldo remains the highest-paid athlete in the world and continues to play for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Anthony Macri joins ACC as first Chief Revenue Officer
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has appointed Anthony Macri as its first-ever Chief Revenue Officer, a newly created role aimed at driving long-term growth across the collegiate basketball league.
Macri brings nearly two decades of experience in sports business, including recent roles in Formula One and the NBA. He joins from the BWT Alpine F1 Team, where he led US commercial operations and helped secure major sponsorship deals, including a global partnership with viagogo.
At the ACC, Macri will lead revenue strategy across all 18 member institutions, focusing on business development, media rights, fan engagement and new commercial partnerships. He will report directly to ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips.
Earlier in his career, Macri held senior roles at the Memphis Grizzlies, generating over $265m in sponsorship and media revenue during a 10-year stretch. He also previously led the ASEAN Basketball League as CEO and Commissioner.
“Anthony’s experience and track record speak for themselves,” said Phillips. “He’s well positioned to help us grow during this critical time for college sports.”
