The inaugural Legends Charity Game at Estádio José Alvalade was a spectacle that delivered on both its charitable mission and the promise of watching football’s greats in action.

The match saw a commanding performance from the home side, with the Portugal Legends defeating the World XI 4-1.

The game got off to a flying start, with the Portuguese side, managed by Costinha, establishing early dominance. The iconic trio of Ricardo Quaresma, Nani, and Luís Figo showed flashes of their vintage form, with Quaresma immediately testing World XI goalkeeper Petr Čech with a shot in the first minute.

The home side’s pressure paid off in the 15th minute when former PSG striker Pauleta scored the opener, much to the delight of the 50,000-plus fans in attendance. The momentum stayed with Portugal, and just before halftime, Hélder Postiga doubled the lead with a well-placed header.

The second half began with both teams making a flurry of substitutions, bringing on more legendary figures. It was a tactical change that immediately benefited both sides. For Portugal, Hélder Postiga secured his second goal of the night just a minute into the half, finishing a cross from Luís Figo.

The World XI, coached by legendary Brazilian Roberto Carlos, found their footing and a moment of brilliance shortly after. Michael Owen, known for his pace and clinical finishing, showed he still had it, slotting home a precise pass from Alessandro Del Piero to make it 3-1.

The game’s most memorable moment came in the 52nd minute when Luís Figo conjured a piece of magic. After a build-up play involving Pepe and Nuno Gomes, the former Ballon d’Or winner received the ball and, with a trademark touch, nutmegged his opponent before unleashing a powerful strike that beat a stretching Edwin van der Sar.

The World XI had a chance to get back into the match when Kaká earned a penalty, but Youri Djorkaeff’s attempt was saved by Portugal’s Beto. The final nail in the coffin came in the 73rd minute when Portugal’s ever-agile defender Pepe showed his attacking prowess, heading in a cross to seal the 4-1 victory.

The match, while competitive, was played in a spirit of good sportsmanship, with players from both teams embracing and sharing a few laughs. The biggest highlight outside of the goals themselves was the appearance of undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, who played for the World XI and received a warm welcome from the crowd.

While the roar of the crowd at Estádio José Alvalade celebrated a dominant 4-1 victory for the Portugal Legends over a star-studded World XI, the real triumph for Sporting Global’s inaugural Legends Charity Game extends far beyond the pitch.
