US President Donald Trump has held talks with LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.
Held at the White House, this meeting marks the second of the month on the topic of unifying the sport. Earlier this month, Trump met with Monahan, Adam Scott, Player Director at PGA tour and golfing icon Tiger Woods.
Following the first discussion, a PGA Tour statement read: “We have just concluded a constructive working session at the White House with President Trump and his excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan.
“Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, we have initiated a discussion about the reunification of golf. We are committed to moving as quickly as possible and will share additional details as appropriate.
“We share a passion for the game and the importance of reunification. Most importantly, we all want the best players in the world playing together more often and are committed to doing all we can to deliver that outcome for our fans.”
Since LIV Golf’s launch in 2022, the sport has been split. The Saudi-backed league lured top PGA Tour players with lucrative contracts, leading to a heated rivalry between the two organisations. Some, like Jon Rahm, made the switch, while others remained loyal to the PGA and criticised the breakaway tour.
In June 2023, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf announced a merger to unify commercial operations and resolve ongoing legal battles. However, negotiations missed the initial 31 December deadline, leading to an extension. Progress has since been slow, with key figures like Jimmy Dunne resigning from the PGA Tour’s policy board over stalled talks.
A longtime golf enthusiast and course owner, Trump has ties to both sides. His resorts have hosted LIV Golf events, yet Rory McIlroy recently claimed Trump supports the PGA in its dispute. The former president has even suggested he could finalise a deal in “15 minutes”.
While details of Trump’s latest meeting with LIV chairman Al-Rumayyan and PGA commissioner Monahan remain scarce, his involvement has reignited hope among fans eager to see the sport’s top players compete together once again.
