The NFL has confirmed it will stage regular season games in Munich in 2026 and 2028, deepening its long-term commitment to Germany as its most strategically important European market and signalling a shift from one-off international fixtures to repeat-host city partnerships
The National Football League (NFL) has announced it will return to Munich for regular season games in 2026 and 2028, extending its presence in Germany under a multi-year partnership with the City of Munich and FC Bayern Munich.
The games will be played at the FC Bayern Munich Stadium, which previously hosted NFL regular season fixtures in 2022 and 2024. This makes Munich one of the NFL’s most established international host cities, underlining the league’s preference for repeat venues as it expands its global calendar.
Germany has emerged as the NFL’s largest market outside North America, with the league estimating a fanbase of more than 20 million. Games staged in the country have consistently sold out, with attendances exceeding 69,000 in Munich and more than 70,000 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin in 2025. The league has already confirmed Berlin will host additional regular season games in 2027 and 2029.
Beyond staging games, the NFL said it will continue working with the City of Munich on sports development initiatives, with a particular focus on growing flag football participation. The non-contact format will feature at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 and is being positioned by the league as a key entry point for new fans and participants in international markets.
NFL Flag, the league’s official youth programme, was launched in Germany in 2020 and has since reached more than 40,000 young athletes through schools and local youth leagues. The programme forms part of the NFL’s broader strategy to build year-round engagement in core international territories, rather than relying solely on high-profile matchdays.

“The previous games have not only won the hearts of fans, they have also strengthened our successful cooperation with the NFL. Together, we are committed to promoting football in Germany and spreading the palpable enthusiasm for the sport far beyond the stadiums,” said Verena Dietl, Mayor of the City of Munich.
Alexander Steinforth, NFL General Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, described Munich as holding “a very special place” in the league’s European strategy, noting that it was the first city to host regular season NFL games in Germany. He said the return to Munich demonstrated the NFL’s long-term commitment to building a sustained presence in the market.
An expanding international profile
For the 2026 season, the NFL has already confirmed regular season games in Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro and London, with additional international fixtures expected to be announced. The league will stage two games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, while the Los Angeles Rams will serve as the designated home team for the game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
