Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez seeks new term as election opens
Real Madrid has opened its presidential election process after Florentino Pérez confirmed he has every intention to stand for another term at the club.

The election was triggered after the club’s electoral commission approved the process earlier this week, with candidates now required to submit applications before the 23 May deadline.
Pérez, who has led Real Madrid for the majority of the past 25 years, is expected to seek another term despite growing scrutiny following the club’s recent on-pitch struggles.
Real Madrid’s failure to secure a major trophy for a second straight season has added pressure around the leadership, particularly after defeat to Barcelona confirmed the club would finish without silverware once again.
Pérez has defended the club’s direction publicly in recent days, while also promising squad investment ahead of next season.
The 78-year-old businessman has faced no opposition in each of Real Madrid’s previous five presidential elections, with the club’s ownership rules continuing to make it difficult for others to apply.
Under Real Madrid’s statutes, candidates must have held club membership for at least 20 years, hold Spanish nationality and personally guarantee 15% of the club’s annual budget.
Fanatics Commerce names Jamie Gersch Chief Marketing Officer
Fanatics Commerce has appointed Jamie Gersch as its new Chief Marketing Officer as the company looks to bolster its global brand strategy.
In the role, Gersch will spearhead marketing operations across the Fanatics Commerce division, bringing brand, performance and lifecycle marketing under a single roof. Based in California, she will report directly to Fanatics Commerce CEO Andrew Low Ah Kee.
Gersch joins after senior marketing positions at Rothy’s, Old Navy and Gap, where she led campaigns focused on customer growth and digital commerce.
In a statement, Gersch described Fanatics as sitting “at the intersection of sports, culture, and commerce”, adding that the company offered “endless opportunities to create lasting, meaningful relationships with sports fans”.
One area Fanatics Commerce has begun to focus on is athlete partnerships, signing a multi-year agreement with Max Verstappen in December 2025. The deal, the first athlete agreement with the division, saw Verstappen launch an official global online store and exclusive collectables.
MotoGP appoints Vince Russell as CFO
MotoGP has announced former Channel 4 and Sky executive Vince Russell as its new Chief Financial Officer.
Russell joins the organisation with immediate effect, bringing more than two decades of financial leadership experience across the media and entertainment sectors. He most recently served as CFO at Channel 4.
MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said Russell’s background in international media businesses would be important as the organisation continues to evolve its global sports and entertainment strategy.
In a statement, Russell described MotoGP as entering “an incredibly exciting new phase of growth” and pointed to the championship’s international fanbase and commercial potential.
The appointment follows a transition period for MotoGP after Liberty Media completed its acquisition of Dorna Sports in 2025. The deal, valued at almost $5bn, gave Liberty an 84% stake in MotoGP’s commercial rights holder.
USL promotes Paul McDonough as CEO
The United Soccer League (USL) has promoted Paul McDonough to President and CEO as it continues with plans for a restructured professional football system in the US.
McDonough, who has served as USL President and Chief Soccer Officer since 2023, will take on the top leadership role on June 1. He replaces Alec Papadakis, who steps into a Co-chair position on the league’s board.
The USL is advancing plans to introduce a multi-division structure anchored by the upcoming USL Premier, sitting above the existing Championship and League One competitions.
McDonough has been a key architect of the league’s recent direction and said the USL aims to build “a connected soccer system across every level” where performance drives opportunity.
While the MLS is undoubtedly the league’s greatest domestic competitor, there could be a greater threat from overseas.
FIFA recently proposed rules that could allow leagues to play fixtures abroad, raising the potential of increased international competition for audiences, particularly as European leagues explore opportunities in the US market.
