Sky Sports will air key ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixtures free-to-air, widening access as broadcasters look to accelerate audience growth in women’s sport.
Sky Sports will make selected matches from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 available free-to-air.
The broadcaster confirmed the tournament opener, final, and several home nations fixtures will be shown on Freeview via Sky Mix, while all home nations matches will also be accessible without a subscription through the Sky Sports app.
The opening match between England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston will additionally be streamed on YouTube, extending reach beyond traditional broadcast channels.
The distribution model reflects a hybrid approach, with Sky retaining exclusive rights to the tournament overall while selectively removing paywall barriers for key fixtures.
Jonathan Licht, Chief Sports Officer at Sky Sports UK and Ireland, positioned the move as part of a longer-term strategy to grow the sport’s audience.
“We believe this summer can be a defining moment for women’s cricket,” he said. “By making many of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup matches available to everyone, we can reach new audiences, build fandom and inspire the next generation.”
The approach aligns with a wider trend among rights holders and broadcasters, where free-to-air exposure is increasingly used as a tool to drive visibility and long-term engagement, particularly in women’s sport.
ICC: access as a growth lever
For the International Cricket Council, the expanded access forms part of a broader push to scale the women’s game globally.
Sanjog Gupta, CEO of the ICC, described the tournament as a “significant fan recruitment opportunity”, adding that widening access across multiple platforms is central to the governing body’s strategy.
“This is a significant step by Sky Sports, our partner in the UK, and aligns with our strategy to widen access for fans across screens and stadia,” he said.
Sky’s move comes amid sustained growth in women’s sport viewership, with the broadcaster noting that the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 generated a record 20 million viewer hours on its platforms.
The company has also positioned itself as the UK’s leading investor in women’s sports rights, accounting for nearly 80% of all televised women’s sport in 2025, with total viewing up 25% year-on-year across more than 4,000 hours of live coverage.
Part of a wider summer of women’s sport
The tournament forms part of a broader slate of women’s cricket and sport on Sky this summer, including a first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s between England and India and the return of The Hundred later in July. By clustering major events across the calendar, Sky is effectively building a continuous narrative around women’s sport, rather than relying on isolated moments of peak attention.
Despite the expanded access, Sky will still broadcast every match live across its subscription channels and streaming platform NOW, maintaining the commercial value of its rights package.
This dual approach highlights an increasingly common model in sports media: using free-to-air coverage to attract new audiences, while preserving premium content behind paywalls to support long-term monetisation.
With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 set to run from 12 June to 5 July across England and Wales, the tournament will offer a clear indication of whether expanded access can translate into sustained audience growth.
