Real Madrid appoints José Mourinho as Head Coach
Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as first-team Head Coach, with the club’s Board of Directors – meeting on Thursday 11 June and presided over by club President Florentino Pérez – agreeing a three-season deal running until 30 June 2029.

The appointment delivers on one of Pérez’s central promises from his re-election campaign, after the long-serving president secured another term in last weekend’s vote of club members. Real Madrid will pay Benfica the €15m ($17.3m) compensation required to release Mourinho from his contract in Portugal, with the 63-year-old set to join on 13 July, the day pre-season begins.
Mourinho returns to Real Madrid 13 years after his first spell in charge ended, inheriting a squad that finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy following the mid-season dismissal of Xabi Alonso and a caretaker period under Álvaro Arbeloa, whose departure was ratified this week.
USL names Paul McDonough President and CEO
The United Soccer League (USL) has appointed Paul McDonough as President and Chief Executive Officer, handing him the top job as the FIFA World Cup 2026 turns the spotlight on the American game.
McDonough will lead the league’s strategy, operations and execution as it advances its long-term vision for professional soccer in the United States – a vision that now includes a Division One league and the introduction of promotion and relegation across the USL pyramid.
The appointment triggers a reshuffle at the board level. Alec Papadakis moves from CEO to Co-Chair of the USL Board, while BellTower CEO Kewsong Lee is elevated from Vice Chair to Co-Chair – a structure that puts investment leadership alongside soccer leadership at the top of the organisation.
With the World Cup expected to supercharge interest in soccer in America over the next six weeks, the USL has put new leadership in place to capture this.

76ers rebuild front office around Gansey and Nelson
The Philadelphia 76ers have completed a wholesale restructure of their basketball operations, with Mike Gansey formally introduced as President of Basketball Operations on Monday and former NBA All-Star Jameer Nelson promoted to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.

Gansey arrives from the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he served as General Manager, and takes over following the departure of Daryl Morey. Nelson – a Philadelphia-area native who starred at Saint Joseph’s before a 14-year NBA playing career – becomes the franchise’s number two executive, capping a rapid rise that began as a scout and assistant General Manager with G League affiliate the Delaware Blue Coats in 2020.
Elsewhere in the front office, Elton Brand will not return as General Manager and is working through a new role with the franchise and parent company Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, while assistant General Manager Prosper Karangwa has signed a multiyear extension after drawing interest from rival teams.
England Football Learning celebrates latest UEFA Pro Diploma graduates
Away from the boardroom, the next generation of technical leadership was credentialed this week as England Football Learning celebrated its latest cohort of UEFA Pro Diploma graduates.
The cohort represented clubs and organisations across men’s and women’s football in England and beyond, including Chelsea Women Head Coach Sonia Bompastor, SK Brann Head Coach Laura Kaminski, and AFC Bournemouth First Team Assistant Manager Tommy Elphick.
The UEFA Pro Diploma is the highest professional game coaching qualification offered by England Football Learning – the gateway credential for top-flight management – with the programme spanning seven modules, workshops at St George’s Park, and a study visit to an international tournament.

“I’m really proud of myself when I reflect on it and all of the work I’ve put into this course,” Bompastor said. “It represents a lot because when you come from a different country, being able to achieve that diploma in a different language is quite impressive.”
Elphick added: “Some of the richness from this course comes from moments you don’t expect, connecting with people you don’t expect to connect with. As long as you’re open-minded, there’s a lot to take from the course.”
