West Ham United has formed a partnership with Trainline to offer fans of the club discounts on train tickets for select Premier League and Women’s Super League fixtures.

As part of the ‘I came by train’ initiative, Trainline will offer Hammers fans 20% off rail fares for selected games for both its men’s and women’s teams, with additional aims to promote sustainability with the reduction of emissions.

This pilot will see 20% discount codes offered to away match ticket holders for the Premier League fixtures at Everton on 15 March at 3pm, and Manchester United on 10 May at 3pm KO). Fans travelling to the West Ham Women’s WSL fixture at Leicester City on 11 May – kick-off TBC – will also be able to claim a discount on train travel.

Mike Field, Member of the West Ham Club Advisory Board, commented: “We were delighted that the Club has heard our feedback about the increasing cost of away matches.

“When the Fan Advisory Board was approached about working with Trainline, we were supportive of fans being able to take advantage of discounted rail fares to away matches.

“Travelling to support West Ham United over land and sea can be expensive. This initiative provides a great opportunity for loyal supporters of both the men’s and women’s teams to reduce their carbon footprint, whilst saving money on their travels to watch the Hammers in action.”

According to Trainline, taking the train is 67% less polluting than driving a car. This is why the train company is incentivising West Ham fans to take the train for away fixtures as it brings it closer to its goals of reducing emissions.

Fans who purchase tickets for the selected fixtures can complete a short survey about how train travel can further support fans travel habits when they follow the club away. In return, fans will receive an exclusive discount code to use when buying advance train travel for the respective fixtures.

Natalie Marques, Head of the I came by train movement at Trainline, said: “There is a huge opportunity to drive modal shift through fan power. The demand is there; football fans have a higher ambition than the general public to be more environmentally friendly. And there are lots of train routes in the UK that are faster, cheaper and always greener than driving.

“Having West Ham United join the team of clubs who are actively encouraging sustainable modal shift through the I came by train initiative is a huge win for the fans’ wallets and the planet.”
